Trump announces shock tariff on EIGHT European countries after troops were sent to Greenland

Donald Trump announced that he will place tariffs on eight European countries unless they agreed to let the US take over Greenland.

In a post to his Truth Social on Saturday morning, Trump said that Britain, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the Netherlands and Finland would all be hit with a ten percent tariff on ‘any and all goods’ sent to the US as of February 1.

The president said such a tariff would last until a deal was reached for the US to complete the purchase of Greenland from Denmark.

If a deal was not struck between the nations as of June 1, the tariff will be increased to 25 percent.

He called on Denmark to hand over the mineral-rich territory by claiming world peace is at stake.

'Only the United States of America, under PRESIDENT DONALD J. TRUMP, can play in this game, and very successfully, at that!' Trump wrote.

'Nobody will touch this sacred piece of Land, especially since the National Security of the United States, and the World at large, is at stake.'

Trump said that the eight countries would face tariffs due to them sending troops to Greenland in the last few days.

The rest of the World used to prefer "buying American", in return for that co-operation ... that's what made America the #1 manufacturing country

Guess there's no need to buy American anymore, if America is abandoning the World?

For example, Canada will be deciding on a new northern fighter aircraft soon ... the choice is between Boeing's F-35 and Saab's Grypon ... and the Saab aircraft is actually a better, proven cold-weather aircraft

So America won't take offense, if countries that America plans to abandon (in terms of defense agreements) buy elsewhere from now on?

Such a sad and stupid move which will weaken America overall. The Maga anti nato crowd forget that for decades allies have been buying trillions of dollars worth of American made and manufactured military equipment, in return America provided protection. Now that America is walking away, those allies will no longer buy American made equipment and will instead invest in themselves and other partners.

Decades upon decades of trust and friendship in the bin for a piece of land America can already use for military reasons - In fact you have already withdrawn thousands of troops from it.

Congress needs to grow some balls.

Surely there's a better way to pursue securing mineral rights and military bases than this. Weaponizing trade with allies isn't good for anyone. I can understand leveling the playing field but that isn't what this is.

Actually, the Cold War was WWIII, fought in slow-motion, without the principals directly engaging (except for a few dogfights over Korea) thanks to nuclear deterrence.  Lack of strategic vision made people think it was lots of little wars, each of which was actually just a campaign:  the Greek civil war, the Berlin airlift, Korea, the Cuban Revolution, the Cuban Missile Crisis, Vietnam, the Contra war in Nicaragua, the civil war in Angola, the liberation of Grenada, the Russo-Afghan war,.. were all just campaigns in WWIII.

I'm not sure the GWOT actually counts: only one major power involved, even if it's got engagements on most continents.

(Of course, by the standards by which WWI and WWII were called 'world wars':  engagements on most continents, all major powers involved, the Seven Years War (French and Indian War in these parts) and the Napoleonic Wars (War of 1812 in these parts, and yes, we were on Napoleon's side geostrategically) should have been called "world wars'.)

I would no longer count those nations that are slowly but surely being conquered by islam to be "allies" much longer.

Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic -- yes.
They're worth saving because they're trying to save themselves.
