WCSO: Traffic stop in Webb County leads to human smuggling arrest of teens
Story by Jose De La Rosa • 16h
A traffic stop on Monday afternoon led to two arrests in Webb County after deputies working Operation Lone Star reported suspected smuggling activity near the 30-mile marker, according to the Webb County Sheriff’s Office.
Tristan Nwoko, 18, and Jeremiah Shelley, 19, were accused of transporting two people who were determined to be in the country illegally and were each charged with two counts of smuggling of persons, the sheriff’s office said.
Jail records show Nwoko and Shelley were booked Monday into the Webb County Jail, where they remained in custody as of Tuesday.
Sheriff Martin Cuellar released a statement praising the agencies involved, including U.S. Border Patrol.
“Today’s arrest demonstrates the importance of strong collaboration between our deputies, Operation Lone Star and our federal partners,” he said. “Working together allows us to disrupt criminal smuggling activity and keep our community safe.”
