GRPD: 51-year-old man shot, killed after shooting at officers
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A 51-year-old man died Saturday after opening fire on Grand Rapids police and then being shot by officers, police say.
Grand Rapids Police Department Deputy Chief Joe Trigg said the situation started around noon with a report of a domestic situation between a man and woman and involving a gun. The woman had already left the home where it happened before calling police. Officers went to the home on Strobel Avenue NW near 4th Street to try to talk to the man, but Trigg said he wouldn’t answer the door.
“At that time, the officers’ hands were pretty much tied. There was nothing else for them to follow up on at that point,” Trigg said.
GRPD said at around 4:00 p.m., the woman called police again. According to Trigg, the woman reported the man had texted her to say he had a gun and was going to take his own life.
