Why the US Navy Tried to Bury a $20M Stealth Boat That Could Change Naval Warfare

The Juliet Marine “Ghost” was designed to solve a deadly vulnerability exposed when terrorists sank the USS Cole with just $500 of explosives. Built with stealth surfaces, twin hydrofoil pontoons, and a super-cavitating propulsion system, it can skim across the ocean at up to 70 knots with barely any radar signature. But instead of adopting it, the US Navy spent years blocking the company from selling it abroad. Bureaucracy and ego nearly killed one of the most innovative naval platforms ever created. Only now, after two decades, is the Ghost finally making a comeback.

Why the US Navy Tried to Bury a $20M Stealth Boat That Could Change Naval Warfare

The Juliet Marine “Ghost” was designed to solve a deadly vulnerability exposed when terrorists sank the USS Cole with just $500 of explosives.

The Cole was not sunk. The hull was badly damaged and some sailors were killed and wounded, while the ship was stationary in port taking on fuel. The deck watch was helpless against to boat even though they carried guns, but a Bill Clinton order forbade them from having ammo in the guns. The order was its vulnerability.

The Cole was repaired and put back on duty.

No Ghost Ship would have changed anything. Had it been there then instead of the Cole, it would have suffered even more damage.
