SDPD's Response to ICE Operation Raises Concerns

A recent ICE surveillance operation in San Diego became a focal point of tension when the San Diego Police Department (SDPD) was called for crowd control after ICE agents reported being assaulted. Local community members voiced concerns, suggesting that the police presence escalated the situation rather than maintaining peace. Despite witnessing no assaults, community activist Benjamin Prado recorded an SDPD officer preparing to use pepper spray. The incident has raised questions about the city's adherence to S.B. 54, a law that limits local police cooperation with federal immigration authorities. Commander Adam Sharkey of SDPD clarified that their role was to respond to the 911 call and provide immediate assistance, which led to the arrest and transfer of an individual to Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) for federal assault charges, not for immigration purposes.
