WASHINGTON — House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., joined the top Democrat on the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee on Wednesday in urging Republican lawmakers not to politicize the delivery of disability benefits to veterans. Speaking to the nation’s largest veterans advocacy groups, Jeffries and Rep. Mark Takano, D-Calif., pledged their commitment to support veterans with benefits and services, as some Republican lawmakers push reforms at the Department of Veterans Affairs. “This should never be a partisan issue. It is an American issue. I want to reiterate our commitment to veterans and your quality of life,” said Jeffries, who kept his comments brief but stayed for most of a 90-minute roundtable Wednesday organized by Takano and Democrats on the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee. Jeffries said veterans need to be “treated with the respect and dignity they deserve.”
