‘ICE Not Welcome’: California Officials Defy DHS
Santa Clara County supervisors and San Jose officials are reportedly taking steps to restrict Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activity on public properties, citing concerns that federal operations discourage immigrants from accessing essential services.
The County Board of Supervisors is working on an ordinance to designate county buildings and lands as off-limits to ICE enforcement. The move quickly drew criticism from federal authorities.
Santa Clara County Supervisor Sylvia Arenas stated, “Let us be clear, ICE is not welcome on our county facilities and controlled lands. These lands serve critical needs for our community and immigration enforcement is not one of them.”
Supporters said the ordinance would protect community spaces and public services for immigrants. Officials modeled it on similar measures in other cities limiting federal immigration operations.
