BECKLEY, W.Va. (WVVA) - Back in October Governor Morrisey announced two major initiatives focused on strengthening immigration enforcement and combating drug-related crime to make West Virginia’s streets safer. After the first 11 days 37 illegal immigrants were arrested, that number has now grown.
On bridge day 250 commercial motor vehicles were checked near the West Virginia Turnpike. During the inspection West Virginia state police found 18 undocumented immigrants bringing the total number of illegal immigrants arrested to 60.
Governor Morrisey traveled to Beckley for a major announcement regarding a federal partnership with the West Virginia police, an initiative the governor says keeps mountaineers safe.
“I want to commend the state police and our partners at ICE, who unfortunately due to the government shut down can’t be here today. But all of them have done tremendous work to help protect our citizens from this threat. And not only of the undocumented aliens but of the illicit drugs that come in “, said Governor Morrisey
