Here are 10 examples of how Net Zero policies have come under pressure and are crumbling globally over time, due to political, economic, or technological headwinds.
1. United Kingdom: withdrawing government
The British government under Rishi Sunak has postponed or weakened several climate measures in 2024, including the ban on new petrol and diesel cars (now only from 2035).
2. Germany: farmers' protests and energy costs
In Germany, the closure of nuclear power plants and dependence on gas led to high energy prices. Farmers protested en masse against climate measures that threatened their business operations.
3. The Netherlands: nitrogen policy under fire
The Dutch nitrogen policy, which is strongly intertwined with Net Zero targets, is meeting fierce resistance from farmers and citizens. The fall of the Rutte IV cabinet in 2023 was partly caused by this dossier.
