American Athlete Arrested On Cannabis Charges Faces Death Penalty In Indonesia

An American basketball player possibly faces the death penalty or a lengthy prison sentence after being arrested in Indonesia on drug charges. Jarred Shaw, 35, used to play in the Indonesian Basketball League for the Tangerhawks. That was until May, when reports say he received a package in the mail from Thailand containing 132 cannabis gummies, which are not legal in Indonesia, and where some offenders have been sentenced to death by firing squad. When my ship was in the Philippines some 50 years ago, a local was convicted of somewhat the same thing and sentenced to life in prison.  He argued he couldn't spend life in prison because he had a family.  The courts agreed and ordered him hung.  When will these dumb ass*s learn other countries are not the US and due process doesn't exist?

I knew a guy who was working out of Singapore. The laws were very strict, and the penalties harsh. He said you learned what not to do and just didn't do it. Drug running or possession carried a death sentence, and it was often administered on the spot.

I hate punks, I hate people who flout laws, regs and standards for no reason other than to be a rebel without a clue and flip the bird at everything.

But what I really hate are people who go to foreign countries and try to impose their crap on the culture thinking they have some kind of American constitutional rights there, and wonder why they receive harsh consequences for their actions from their legal system.
The Republic is lost.

I was in Indonesia years ago on a business trip and drove past a police station.

Outside of it was a statue of a man with his hand cutoff.

This often starts in College or even High School where the 'star' athletes get a pass for the stuff they do that can be covered up (and it often is, aggressively so). No surprise that the 'don't you know who I am' kicks in and they think they can do anything they want to regardless of the rules.

I have news for them. Anyone can be replaced.
