(Gray Louisiana) - Governor Jeff Landry on Monday released a short, cinematic video about the newly opened immigration detention unit at the Louisiana State Penitentiary known informally as “Louisiana Lockup” or Camp 57.
The clip uses drone footage, dark pounding music, mug shots, border patrol vehicles, people being loaded onto planes and bodycam clips, to frame the site as a response to violent crime tied to illegal immigration.
The video opens with text that reads, in part, “In 2023, one year before Donald Trump took office, over 14 million illegal immigrants breached our borders, the highest number in U.S. history. Many are violent criminals.”
The footage then cuts to scenes of Angola, alligators, barking dogs and a prisoner transport bus on rural roads before interspersing quotes from Landry, President Donald Trump and news headlines.
Camp 57, the refurbished section of Angola once known as Camp J, was unveiled in early September during a visit by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and state officials.
