Sweeping ICE Arrests in West Chicago
Illinois State Sen. Karina Villa (D) has confronted federal immigration agents during enforcement actions and advised residents to stay indoors as local advocates responded. U.S. Customs and Border Protection Sector Chief Gregory Bovino criticized Villa’s actions and defended agents’ use of masks for safety, facing backlash from community leaders. The clash came as U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has confirmed targeted arrests in West Chicago.
This was part of a broader operation that has led to hundreds of detentions across the Chicago metro area and neighboring states since earlier this month.
Villa posted videos claiming immigration advocates reported arrests near school drop-offs. Lawmakers and community leaders said at least 13 people were detained from a van, grocery store, and apartment complex.
Villa said, “It’s very important that, as allies, we show up for each other.” She added, “Donald Trump is seeing this community come together and resist and speak up and speak out, that is why he is targeting our cities, our state, our communities.”
Bovino said the latest operations have led to several hundred arrests in Chicago. He argued that face coverings protect agents amid rising assaults and rejected calls for them to remove masks.
