Earthquake rocks San Jose with strong 4.6-magnitude tremor striking Bay Area at 2:56am

San Francisco residents have been shaken awake by a 4.6 magnitude earthquake which rocked the Bay Area in the early hours of Monday morning.

The natural disaster struck at 2.56am for around four minutes at a depth of 7.8 kilometers (4.8 miles) close to the UC Berkeley campus.

One San Francisco local said their apartment shook from the force of the quake.

'I was sitting on my recliner and the tower I live in was undulating a good while,' they said. 'I'm on the second floor, those on the twelfth most likely swayed more.'

Several others said the movement woke them up, while one longtime Bay Area resident said it was 'the scariest' earthquake she had ever experienced.

Passengers at San Francisco International Airport were also moved by the earthquake, as an early warning app sounded on phones in the area.

Residents in Walnut Creek, Martinez, Alameda and across the Bay in San Francisco were also affected.

San Francisco Fire Department said there were no reports of damage or injuries in the city.

4.6 is strong?

My area experienced a 4.3 in January and we've experienced 5.0+ in the recent past.  And we're supposedly not on any 'active' fault lines.

The quake has since been downgraded to a mere 4.3 yogi555 . To answer your question, I live in west San Jose and did not feel it. The epicenter was a mile or two east of Berserkeley, and happened at ~3AM. IOW, it wasn't that close, and I probably was asleep. Someone working in an upper story of a business building in NE San Jose might have felt it.
