A man in Wisconsin has admitted to killing his 8-year-old stepson while showing off his guns to him — telling cops afterward that he was attempting to "look cool," according to local officials.

Steven Merkel, 53, of Lake Geneva, entered a guilty plea Wednesday for first-degree reckless homicide in connection to the death of his stepson Michael Meagher at a residence on Lincoln Drive in Walworth County on Jan. 20, according to the Town of Geneva Police Department and Walworth County District Attorney's Office.
 
"Merkel claimed the shooting was an accident after police found Michael Meagher fatally wounded inside Merkel's home," said Geneva town supervisor Scott Williams in a statement posted to Facebook after Merkel pleaded guilty in Walworth County Circuit Court.

Town of Geneva police officers and fire personnel responded to the home at around 2:25 a.m. and found Michael suffering from a single gunshot wound, according to a Jan. 20 press release. "Life saving measures" were performed but the boy succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital.

There seems to have a lot of reporting lately on crimes that did not exist in the media just a few months ago. This is the banner the Democrats will wave during the midterm campaign.
They have rediscovered an old issue.
They have the media run-up to that going on now. Expect movies and TV shows along the same theme.
Until the election is over, we will hear about shootings on a daily basis, and it is a given that the guns, not the perpetrators, will be blamed.

Every firearms accident I have ever read about stemmed from a failure to follow one or more of the 4 Golden Rules of Firearms Safety.

1. All guns are loaded. Never treat a firearm as though it were unloaded, even if you know it to be.
2. Never point a gun at anything or anyone you are unwilling to destroy.
3. Keep your finger off the trigger and outside of the trigger guard unless you have a target in your sights that you are willing to destroy.
4. Know your target, and what lies beyond it. Bullets go through things.

Alec Baldwin, and far too many others have found out the hard way.
