A member of the Democrats’ progressive wing may be in legal jeopardy soon after admitting that “half” of her extended family is still living in the U.S. illegally.
Democrat Rep. Delia Ramirez (D-TX) made headlines last month while declaring her patriotism for Guatemala, her country of origin, is greater than what she feels for the United States. Those remarks in Mexico City pale in comparison to her latest.
During a segment on MSNBC, Ramirez had the audacity to claim that she is looking out for members of her family who remain undocumented as they race to avoid deportation.
The Trump administration’s mass deportation agenda is deeply personal “for me, who is the daughter of immigrants, who half my family is still undocumented,” she told a panel.
Ramirez, who represents Illinois’ 3rd Congressional District, is married to her husband, Boris Ramirez, a DACA recipient, and she ran for office in part on her pledge to secure legal status for so-called “Dreamers.”
On X, hashtags including #DeportDelia and #AmericanFirst underscored the backlash that was generated by her comments as users expressed outrage.
“She can, and should be kicked out of Congress immediately. Her allegiance is not to the United States of America, that in her own words,” one person wrote.
