Fearsome next-gen fighter and fleet of unmanned combat craft usher in new era for USAF
Story by Ethan Evans • 1h
A sixth-generation fighter jet and a fleet of unmanned combat aircraft will be the cornerstones of the US Air Force's plans for facing growing threats from Russia, China and North Korea, says an expert.
The USAF is shifting its strategy after decades of operations in the Middle East in a similar transition from the Vietnam War to the Cold War, according to Major General Joe Kunkel, director of Force Design, Integration and War Gaming,
Major Gen Kunkel said: "We are probably not the right size or shape for the fight we might face against a peer adversary. We are designing to meet that threat."
A huge part of the shift in focus is the new, state-of-the-art F-47 fighter jet designed under the Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) program by Boeing.
