I think a lot of it has to do with the lack of an attention span longer than a gnat's penis.  With the internet and TV, today's kids have developed a lack persistence or long-term patience.  They approach information from the hot and now philosophy where conflict is immediately resolved, even if the resolution is speculation or lies from the media.  So, Trump has thrown them completely out of their element by destroying the routine "knowledge," or settled science as it was called, and they don't have the patience to care about it. **nononono*

When all you have heard all your life is "The world is going to end!" sooner or later you just stop giving a damn.

Unfortunately, that also entrenches a mindset that long term plans mean, like, next Friday, not decades long plans nor building generational wealth.
