New forecast reveals abnormal temperature shift across the US ... and the states worst hit

Daily Mail
By STACY LIBERATORE
29 July 2025

While much of the US has been sweltering under above-average temperatures, a major shift in the weather is on the way, set to bring significant relief from the heat.

Forecasters predict temperatures could drop by nearly 20 degrees later this week, thanks to an expansive area of high pressure moving in from Canada.

Cooler conditions will first reach the north-central United States on Wednesday, with a gradual cooldown spreading across much of the eastern half of the country in the days that follow.

By Thursday, highs in the 70s are expected across wide portions of the Plains, Midwest, Northeast, and parts of the Ohio Valley.

Friday is shaping up to be the coolest day of the week for many in the Midwest, Ohio Valley, and Northeast.

In New York City, highs will only reach the mid-to-upper 70s, a sharp contrast to the mid-90s earlier in the week and more typical of early June than early August.

The same pattern bringing cooler air is also expected to trigger rounds of heavy rain and thunderstorms, raising the risk of flash flooding in areas already saturated from earlier summer storms.

Flood threats will be most prominent in parts of the Midwest, along the Gulf Coast and across the Northeast.

  • I was a "conspiracy theorist". Now I'm just right.
Cooler and less humid? I just got off a well site about thirty miles south of Canada and we had rain daily, sometimes over an inch at a time. I was only up there 9 days, but now the roads are closed to semi traffic because they are waterlogged. (We have a lot of really nice gravel roads up here between ND 50 and the 'high line' (ND route 5) that are main roads for the area but heavy truck traffic would tear them up when the roadbed is saturated.)

Today's "heat index" is supposed to exceed 100 degrees where we live. Tomorrow, and for the next few days, it will be pleasantly in the 70s. I'm not complaining.

Speaking of the heat index:

I have noticed increased emphasis on “heat index” in TV weather reporting. I’m honestly getting tired of it, as “heat index” has become the focal point of sensationalist garbage in legacy media and on social media. It’s not a measurable quantity and it has little scientific value.

Its calculation relies on numerous assumptions:

1️⃣ You are 5 ft. 7 in. tall and weigh 147 pounds.

2️⃣ Your body is 84% covered in clothing (long trousers and a short-sleeved shirt), and those clothes are 20% fiber.

3️⃣ Your body temperature is a constant 98.6°F (37.0°C), and doesn’t change with outdoor air temperature.

4️⃣ You are walking, not sitting, and are moving at a forward velocity of 3.1 mph.

5️⃣ There is no wind blowing.

6️⃣ There are perfectly clear skies overhead, and no clouds.

7️⃣ There are no correction factors for the time of day (for sun angle), changes in the latitude, or culture (different clothing).

And there are many more assumptions.

It is true that humid air feels oppressive at the same temperature and pressure than comparatively dry air, but how hot it feels will differ from person to person. If you’re a 300+ pound fat ass, a 95° day with a dew point of 78° will feel a lot hotter than it would to someone who is 160 pounds and in shape.

“Heat index” records also don’t go back very far, so there’s no way of knowing what the “heat index” might have been during some of our most historic heatwaves in the 1930s and 1950s. That is why we take actual measurements of air temperature two meters above the ground in a white, enclosed shelter with louvered sides to allow airflow.

It's also bringing Canadian wildfire smoke with it.

Did Trump put a tariff on Candian wildfire smoke?

Speaking of the heat index:

Of course what they dare not mention is people can acclimate to it. I worked in factories and warehouses for decades, a big garden, and fans instead of AC. Of course I acclimated.

I was outside all day yesterday at 96 degrees and ridiculous humidity, and I'm old. 20 years ago it was 10 degrees warmer and I'd do the same.

The Heat Index is for people who are inside all the time and never experience over 80F or high humidity.

The MSM is hyping a record number of heat related deaths compared to 40-50 years ago.

Well 40-50 years ago the number of morbidly obese sedentary people was much much less than today. (You ever see pictures of the crowd at woodstock aug of 69? not a fatass to be seen) You take todays fat f's out in the heat and you don't expect them to keel-over from heat stroke?  C'mon man. It ain't climate change killing people... it's the lifestyle that is killing people.
You don’t become cooler with age but you do care progressively less about being cool, which is the only true way to actually be cool.

We played some golf today (walking, no cart). It was 87; not sure what the heat index was. Yes, it was hot, but we had ice water with us and survived.

I think that's why they can get away with half this crap... Too many people divorced from the land, living in conditioned air, never getting used to the world the way it is.

It works the same way for cold btw... All them years wading in ice cold water after beaver... All them winters on snowshoes dragging a pulk around. Must have got some ice water in my veins ... Because cold just don't bother me much.

Well, 20, 30 below with some wind behind it bothers me a mite, but above zero not so much.

What gets me is the headline. "New forecast reveals abnormal temperature shift across the US"

A forecast reveals what, exactly? A prediction--from the most wrong profession on the planet (excepting maybe medicine).

How does that "reveal" jack?

Not to mention 'hardest hit'... Going from sweltering to a little blowy and 70's doesn't really sound like a hit at all... That sounds like a blessing, PTL.

Meanwhile, we've had it nice out here... We've hit some high 80s and bounced off of low 90s a few times, but mostly mid 80s through July with a predicted 70's and some decent rain for the first week or 10 days of August.

By than we could jack up into triple digits for the rest of August and never come close to drying out enough for fires before the fall rains come in September.

So far, smoke free, and looking like we'll sneak one right past the goalie this year... Just a really nice summer.

Exactly. Living in a climate controlled bubble warps their perspectives. Had a woman yesterday try to spread the climate voodoo BS that this is a different heat, it's not heat like it used to be, it's more potent or something like that. I'm thinking what timeline have you lived in because I've dealt with alot hotter than 96 degrees in my 56 years.

And as @Wingnut said, the morbid obesity/couch potato lifestyle isn't helping with that. People just will not admit it is they, not the climate that has changed.

We have some very hot and humid days the last two weeks of July but it’s starting to cool off and moderate now

Now, if somebody can do something about this smoke

And frankly, it's the Daily Mail grotesquely distorting the actual prediction.

It's a cold front. The first real cooler air of the summer.

As I like to say, another wonderfully demure and understated headline from the Daily Mail. /sarc

It hasn't reached 100 this year, maybe with "heat index"... and I sure melt but can somewhat manage with a fan in my shop area working the wood. But don't ask me to not run the AC in the house, I will fight ya over that.

The wife and I did not have AC for the first few years we were married... I, at first didn't notice it was too bad, but the wife put a bug in my ear and finally we went AC and never looked back.

We topped out at 103 degrees on July 9, and have had a few 'warm' days since, but the temps this week coming up have the highs in the low 80s and lows in the low 60s. Not bad for the end of July. Ours is a climate of extremes, normally, because we are about as far from the mitigating effects of ocean currents as you can get in North America, and in winter there is nothing but a glaciated (naturally bulldozed) landscape and sea ice between us and the north pole, so polar high pressure systems (cold, dry air) are the norm, not the exception. Annual ambient temperature variation is commonly 130 degrees or more between the high and low for the year.

(Perfect if you like a change of seasons.)
