New USDA Program Ties Food Security to National Defense
July 8, 2025 | By C. Todd Lopez, DOD News |

The Department of Agriculture today announced a new governmentwide, multiprong effort focused on ensuring America's ability to secure its own food supply, in part by eliminating interference from adversarial nations.

But the National Farm Security Action Plan isn't just about food or farms. The Defense Department benefits as well.

Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins explained the significance of the first action item in the National Farm Security Action Plan, which she said is likely the most important.

"The first of the seven is securing and protecting American farmland ownership, actively engaging at every level of government to take swift legislative and executive action to ban the purchase of American farmland by Chinese nationals and other foreign adversaries," she said.

Part of that, she said, also involves using presidential authorities to reclaim farmland in the U.S. that is now owned by foreign adversaries.

America does not want a Soylent Green situation to arise.

I hope the Goverment also prioritizes energy security and supply chain security.

This needs to be done sooner rather than later. Yes China is a concern, however, I was surprised that Canada actually owns the largest amount of U.S. agricultural land and Texas has the largest quantity of foreign-held U.S. agricultural land.

Interesting. Back during the Cold War, I went a week without food.

Where was the National Defense, then?

A few years later when that oil boom died and you could not buy a job, a good friend in similar straits applied for food stamps.
After filling out his life history in applications, he was told they could give him eight dollars that month, and maybe ten the next. He shredded the application right over that woman's desk and said for eight dollars, I'll put two in the gun and the rest in the gas tank and I WILL eat.

We ate a lot of venison that year, and we were not the only ones.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

Between 2022 and 2023, Chinese investors held at least 1 acre of agricultural land in 147 counties across the U.S., out of 3,244 total counties and county equivalents. Of these, 38 counties experienced a decline in Chinese investor-owned acreage, with 29 counties seeing a 100% reduction in holdings. Conversely, 10 counties recorded an increase in Chinese investor-owned acreage, while the remaining 99 counties saw no change.
