Astonishing new footage shows the moment Swiss village is buried by falling glacier, obliterating houses - as mayor declares 'the unimaginable has happened'

Astonishing new footage shows the moment a Swiss village was buried by a collapsing glacier yesterday, leaving homes in ruin and one person missing.

Video shows a huge cloud of ice and scree spewing over the village of Blatten on Wednesday, dwarfing tiny Alpine lodges as a chunk of the Birch glacier broke off.

Mud and rockfall hit homes as debris hurtled down the mountain slope and into the valley where the village was built.

Some 90 per cent of the commune, usually home to some 300 people, was covered by the resulting landslide, with one person still missing, officials said.

'The unimaginable has happened,' Blatten's president Matthias Bellwald told a press conference. 'We have lost our village, but not our hearts.'

'Even though the village lies under a huge pile of rubble, we know where our homes and our church must be rebuilt,' he added.

Still, officials fear, 'there's a risk that the situation could get worse'.

Stephane Ganzer, the head of security in the southern Valais region, told local TV channel Canal 9 that the army had been mobilised to deal with the fallout.

The glacier collapse had been expected for several days, and most were able to evacuate earlier this week.

But 'the worst-case scenario has occurred,' acknowledged Raphael Mayoraz, head of the Wallis canton's Natural Hazards Service.

He said three million cubic metres of material had accumulated on the glacier, and then tumbled down into the valley towards homes.
