Hamas claimed on Sunday that it would release American hostage Edan Alexander.

Alexander, a dual U.S.-Israeli citizen, has been held captive in Gaza since the October 7 Hamas attack on southern Israel.

"As part of the efforts made by the brotherly mediators to achieve a ceasefire, Hamas has been in contact with the U.S. administration in recent days," a statement, translated into English from Arabic, from the terror organization said.

"The movement has shown a high level of positivity, and the Israeli soldier with dual American citizenship, [Edan] Alexander, will be released as part of the steps being taken toward a ceasefire, the opening of border crossings, and the entry of aid and relief for our people in the Gaza Strip," the statement continued.

It's unclear when Alexander could be released.

Raised in Tenafly, New Jersey, Alexander moved to Israel at 18 to volunteer for military service in the IDF’s Golani Brigade. He lived with his grandparents in Tel Aviv and at Kibbutz Hazor, where he was part of a group of lone soldiers.

He was kidnapped on the morning of October 7 — a Saturday, he wasn’t required to remain on base. His mother was visiting from abroad, and like many lone soldiers, he had the option to go home for the weekend. But he chose to stay, not wanting to leave his comrades short-staffed on guard duty.

Trump Reveals Edan Alexander Released by Hamas: ‘Coming Home to His Family’

President Donald Trump revealed that Edan Alexander, 21, who is believed to be the last living American hostage held by Hamas, was released and “coming home to his family.”

In a post on Truth Social, Trump expressed gratefulness “to all those involved” in making Alexander’s release happen. Trump added that Alexander’s release by Hamas terrorists was “a step taken in good faith towards the United States and the efforts of the mediators” in order to end the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas.

“I am happy to announce that Edan Alexander, an American citizen who has been held hostage since October 2023, is coming home to his family,” Trump said. “I am grateful to all those involved in making this monumental news happen. This was a step taken in good faith towards the United States and the efforts of the mediators — Qatar and Egypt — to put an end to this very brutal war and return ALL living hostages and remains to their loved ones.”

Trump expressed hope that Alexander’s release was “the first of those final steps necessary” to end the ongoing war conflict.

Report: Hamas Tortured American-Israeli Hostage Edan Alexander; Handcuffed in Cage

Freed American-Israeli hostage Edan Alexander was reportedly tortured by the Palestinian terrorist group Hamas during nearly 600 days in captivity, and was kept handcuffed in a cage along with other hostages.

Alexander was freed by Hamas on Monday, supposedly as a gesture of “goodwill” by the terrorist group, ahead of U.S. President Donald Trump’s visit this week to several Arab countries in the region.

Trump welcomed the release, as did Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, who was present in Israel to greed Alexander. Witkoff is working on a broader regional peace deal involving Saudi Arabia and Qatar. The latter has been Hamas’s source of funds and protection in exile at various times over the last several decades.

However, like many Israeli hostages, particularly male hostages, Alexander was malnourished until shortly before his release. And he appears to have been treated worse than the rest, despite his U.S. citizenship, because he was a soldier in the elite Golani brigade of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) when captures on October 7, 2023.

The Times of Israel, citing Israel’s Kan broadcaster, reported: “Released hostage Edan Alexander suffered severe torture and was held handcuffed in a cage for an extended period of time, according to his initial testimony … [he] was reportedly interrogated for weeks and held in a Hamas tunnel.”

Trump has been harshly critical of Hamas in the past for the malnutrition and torture of Israeli hostages.

The Red Cross, which delivered Alexander to Israel, failed to visit him in captivity even a single time.

‘Thank You President Trump’: Last Living American Hostage Held by Hamas in Gaza Freed, Returns to Israel

Joel B. Pollak12 May 20259

Edan Alexander, 21, the last living U.S. citizen held by Palestinian Hamas terrorists in Gaza, returned to Israel on Monday, amid tears, laughter, and embraces from his family, who flew from America to greet him.

The hostage, who holds the rank of Staff Sergeant in the IDF’s elite Golani brigade, was kidnapped on October 7, 2023, by Hamas during its brutal terror attack against Israel, which killed 1200 people.

During that time, he was reportedly tortured and kept handcuffed inside a cage, near other hostages.

The Red Cross, which has an international legal obligation to visit prisoners of war, never visited him.

However, the Red Cross managed the handover from Hamas on Monday, as it has with other hostages.

U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff was also present.

Israel’s Army Radio discussed the possibility that Alexander might fly to Qatar to meet visiting U.S. President Donald Trump this week, if his health allowed.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu credited President Donald Trump’s diplomacy, and relentless IDF military pressure, for Alexander’s release, which came without explicit conditions. There are still thought to be at least 20, and perhaps 23, living hostages, among 50 total remaining in Gaza. Trump will visit several Arab states in the region later this week, amid efforts to forge regional agreements and broader peace deals.

I am glad he's safe. That said, Israel needs to proceed with turning Gaza into a parking lot.

There, fixed it.
