Trudeau was really despised, so I don't think he'd have won, even with Trump as a foil - Conservatives probably would have won in that case. And they were on course for that, until Trump declared economic war on Canada.
Our "Parliamentary democracy" basically means a
Political Party is elected to be the Government, so until the next election, the
Party stays in power ... that's why Carney could replace Trudeau without a federal election being required.
However, the Liberals were elected last in 2021, and they legally
have to call an election within 5 years. Under our system, the Government still has the power to call that election at
any time they choose (
no fixed election dates, like there is in the US), so Carney took advantage of the current Trump-hatred and won.
