The researchers bragged in Nature back in 2015 about creating a chimera virus from a bat virus spike protein and a "mouse-adapted SARS backbone" (in Chapel Hill, NC, in 2014). The virus was resistant to known antivirals and attacked epithelial airway cells and Type 1 pneumocytes. Two of the researchers on the team were from the Wuhan Institute of Virology.

IIRC, China would not allow domestic flights from Wuhan and Hubei province, but would allow international flights. The area in Italy that had high death rates had bad air, an aging population with a host of comorbidities, and a herd of expatriate Chinese textile workers... The epidemic was released from the Wuhan lab, accidentally or otherwise, and distributed globally by the Chinese.
