Columbia University has fallen under scrutiny for adopting measures tied to federal funding demands from the Trump administration. The changes have led to stricter protest policies and actions against perceived campus antisemitism. The university’s compliance followed the arrest of pro-Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil, which prompted protests over free expression.

Several students “shredded their own diplomas” in protest, according to Fox News.

The Department of Homeland Security arrested Khalil in March, linking him to Hamas. Khalil is a Syrian-born graduate student and is now battling his deportation in court. Following his detention, other international students have either fled or been detained.

The Trump administration’s crackdown extended beyond Columbia, impacting campuses like Georgetown, Tufts, and Alabama. These arrests have raised concerns over the silencing of activists and free speech restrictions.

To meet federal demands and reinstate $400 million in funding, Columbia has adopted several measures. These include banning masks at protests, hiring officers to arrest students, and appointing oversight for specific academic departments.

So what, they are probably considered worthless by prospective employers anyway.
