More than 50 countries have contacted White House to start trade talks, Trump adviser says

APRIL 6, 2025 16:36

More than 50 countries have reached out to the White House to begin trade negotiations, US National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett said on ABC News on Sunday.

Hassett also denied that US President Donald Trump's tariffs were an indirect means to pressure the central bank to cut interest rates

In a separate interview on NBC News, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent downplayed the stock market drop since Trump announced the tariffs and said there was "no reason" to anticipate a recession based on the tariffs.

It will be a nice benefit. Treasuries were down last week. I'm sure Bessent is taking advantage of that.

I sure don't want to see the tariffs below 10% after negotiations and higher for key industries we want back in the USA. At 10% that's an additional $400 billion per year that goes into the treasury and offsets letting people keep tips with no tax as well as overtime and Social Security.
We have a beach head. Now it's time to win the war and save the Republic.

"Treasuries were down last week."

Actually, 4-week t-bills seemed to bottom out in March (around 4.29) and have now crept upwards a small bit (4.31 for every issue in April).

I hope they rise a little more!

That's the latest angle I heard on this.  But from past observations, I believe these daily explanations come down to a bunch of Trump sycophants trying to cover for him by coming up with reasons why he did what he did.

Bottom line - no one really knows what the hell Trump is doing or why he did it.  This is one of those 'sit back and see what happens' moments.

  • Ah, the air is so much fresher here...
It boils down to we deal with this now or slow bleed ourselves into a 2nd or 3rd world country, which the globalist have as much as admitted that they want.

For those who don't live in the Rust Belt, understand that it's still going on, jobs are still bleeding out, and everything but the largest metro areas are slowly dying. Factories paying good wages have many derivative effects, secondary business like millwrights and industrial supply houses, as well as supporting local business and making them profitable. Schools, infrastructure, the whole shebang.

There are too many places in the rural areas that are methed out skeleton towns with nothing but McJobs as the majority of employment. Another 20 years at most it will be game over.

You do realize if factories do come back

1. They won't go to the rust belt
2. It will be mostly automated

Really, is that your Papal Proclamation? The Rust Belt is the low cost producer in America. Do you somehow think they are going to Cali? Can you speak without being a walking contradiction?

Yes, they will be automated, but 50 or 100 good paying jobs here and there adds up in the big picture, with money being spent here resulting in all the supporting economy I discussed.

But keep whipping those zingers Porgy Boy, cross your arms and stamp stamp stamp! You don't know what you're talking about, but it sure sounds good!

I guess you forgot about states like Alabama or South Carolina with low taxes and low regulation.

Granted there will be people working at factories to maintain the robots but the days of having armies of people working in factories for life is over.  Comrade

Jukin' and side-steppin'! Midwest, South - it's all America, all small town. They aren't going to be in your precious bi-coastal liberal enclaves.

It won't be all robots there will be a respectable percentage of jobs for people to work. You obviously don't know how these thing work. Being a spinning, grinning frat boy doesn't give you real world experience.
