There are lots of polar orbit unmanned missions on the books (and no small number off the books, too). Any satellite recording the earth's surface and near surface (relatively speaking) phenomena tends to follow a polar track, with the rotation of the earth providing the shift in viewpoint. That way, the whole planet can be covered in a matter of a few orbits.
