The New Georgia Project has fallen under scrutiny following a $300,000 fine from the Georgia State Ethics Commission. The group failed to disclose $4.2 million in campaign contributions and $3.2 million in expenditures related to Stacey Abrams's gubernatorial campaign. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has since received a formal request from Chairman Jason Smith (R-MO) to revoke the organization’s tax-exempt status.
