A handful of Republican state senators in Minnesota have proposed a bill that would classify “Trump Derangement Syndrome,” commonly referred to as “TDS,” as a mental illness.
TDS is a phrase used by conservatives to refer to liberals, or other anti-Trump critics, who have an immense hatred towards the president that often defies logic. Sufferers typically exhibit no ability to give Trump credit for anything, even when he delivers on things they claim to have wanted, and will commonly use labels like “dictator” and “Nazi” to describe the democratically-elected president.
Notable TDS patients include the cast of “The View,” numerous CNN and MSNBC personalities, and Rob Reiner. In Reiner’s case, the actor’s TDS became so severe that he checked himself into a mental health facility shortly after Trump won the presidential election back in November.
Now, Republican lawmakers are looking to help with new legislation that seeks to re-define mental illness under state law. The bill seeks to amend Sections 245.462 and 245I.02 of the Minnesota Statutes to include Trump Derangement Syndrome alongside other recognized mental health conditions.
According to lawmakers, TDS is described as an “acute onset of paranoia” in response to the mention of President Trump or his policies. Symptoms include intense verbal hostility to Trump, acts of aggression or violence towards the president or his supporters, and an inability to go on with one’s day-to-day life due to the presence of Trump or his supporters. This includes places of work, public settings and more.
