The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) reportedly initiated a document destruction process as part of broader administrative measures for President Donald Trump’s plans to reorganize the federal agency.

An email from Erica Carr, USAID’s acting executive secretary, directs Washington staff to shred and burn various documents, a standard procedure in certain operational contexts. The email was recently disclosed by NBC News. Carr’s instructions told staff to prioritize shredding documents, with burning reserved as a secondary measure when necessary.

“Shred as many documents first, and reserve the burn bags for when the shredder becomes unavailable or needs a break,” Carr wrote, NBC News reported.

Plaintiffs headed by the American Foreign Service Association (AFSA) filed a motion for a temporary restraining order to stop the shredding of the documents.

“Defendants are, as this motion is being filed, destroying documents with potential pertinence to this litigation,” the motion said. “Although Plaintiffs do not know at this moment which records are being destroyed, the destruction of records may severely undermine the agency’s ability to function. For example, destruction of records that contain information about the agency’s operations may make it extraordinarily difficult— if not impossible—to recreate and rebuild agency programming if their lawsuit is successful.”

The Trump administration said that all documents designated for destruction are obsolete and have been thoroughly digitized, aligning with the Federal Records Act of 1950. The space being cleared is reportedly to accommodate new operations by Customs and Border Patrol, with officials saying that no documents pertinent to ongoing legal matters are involved.

U.S. District Judge Carl Nichols, who is overseeing the case, delayed his decision on the motion. He mandated that both parties submit a status report by Wednesday morning and outline a proposed timeline for moving forward.

When I hear docs are being destroyed, I cringe.  It should not matter what Trump wants regarding the docs, don't we have laws saying they are to be retained?  This isn't an embassy being overrun in a mussie state, this is an agency in the USA.  Anyone destroying docs should be arrested moving forward.

(The Center Square) – The U.S. Agency for International Development is facing criticism after news broke that federal employees were reportedly told to burn or shred classified documents.

USAID has been the center of controversy since President Donald Trump took office, and billionaire Elon Musk directed the Department of Government Efficiency to expose a slew of spending items widely mocked and criticized, from transgender operas to propaganda overseas and more.
 
A senior USAID official reportedly sent a memo to employees directing them to destroy the documents, raising questions about legality and transparency at the embattled agency.

“Shred as many documents first, and reserve the burn bags for when the shredder becomes unavailable or needs a break,” reads the email obtained by Politico.

Hans von Spakovsky, a legal expert at the conservative Heritage Foundation, wrote on X that “these employees are committing felonies under 18 USC 1519 in destroying Gov documents,” arguing that they “should all be criminally prosecuted especially acting director of USAID.”

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) has reportedly instructed its staff in Washington to destroy classified documents by burning or shredding them, according to an internal email.

The scheduled shredding of documents at the agency was planned for Tuesday, as stated in an email from Erica Carr, the agency’s acting executive secretary. The exact number of recipients of the email remains unknown.

In the email, Carr expressed her gratitude to the staff for their help with organizing classified materials and personal documents. Carr instructed in the email obtained by NBC News, “Shred as many documents first, and reserve the burn bags for when the shredder becomes unavailable or needs a break.”

“Thank you for your assistance in clearing our classified safes and personnel documents,” the email started. Staff members were instructed to mark the burn bags with “secret” using a marker.

The email provided no further explanation for the destruction of the documents.

Wow, the need to shred and burn documents about providing humanitarian aid....    no smoke (literal) here huh?

Another situation, whrere early data should have given insight that there had to be criminality here.  Why didn't Bondi lock the doors to those offices the day the story broke.  Or if was before her confirmation, the interim AG.

Sounds like an illegal or improper order.

There are laws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures for the retention, storage, and eventual disposition of paper records.  In some instances, permanent copies may be stored on micro-fiche or another document archival medium.
