Russia presents US with demands that need to be met before ending Ukraine war: report

Russia has laid out a list of demands to U.S. authorities that need to be met in order for the war in Ukraine to end, Reuters reported, citing two people "familiar with the matter."

The requests are also aimed at resetting the Kremlin's relations with Washington, D.C., the outlet noted.

The list of demands came just before Russia’s Defense Ministry announced it has taken over Sudzha, the biggest town in the Kursk region that has been overrun by Ukrainian forces since the surprise cross-border offensive in August 2024. The takeover came after Russian President Vladimir Putin visited military headquarters in the region and spoke to military commanders there.

The exact contents of Russia's list of demands are not yet known, but they are allegedly similar to demands previously presented to Ukraine, the U.S. and NATO.

Russian and American officials have allegedly discussed the terms over the past few weeks in person and virtually, the people told Reuters.

Earlier requests included not allowing Ukraine to join NATO, an agreement to not deploy foreign troops to Ukraine and international recognition of Russian President Vladimir Putin's claim that Russia owns Crimea and four provinces.

As of Wednesday, President Donald Trump was still waiting to hear if Putin would agree to a 30-day truce that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy agreed to during cease-fire talks in Saudi Arabia.................

Russian President Vladimir Putin’s top foreign policy aide on Thursday dismissed the United States’ 30-day ceasefire proposal for Russia’s war with Ukraine, saying it would merely provide Ukraine’s military with a temporary respite from fighting.

Putin agrees fighting in Ukraine must end but says any plan must lead to 'enduring peace'

Summary

Vladimir Putin says Russia agrees with a Ukraine ceasefire but it should lead to "enduring peace and remove underlying causes of this crisis"

He was speaking as Donald Trump's envoy Steve Witkoff is in Moscow ahead of US-Russia talks on a 30-day ceasefire proposal

Earlier, the Kremlin said it was in the final stage of the operation to drive Ukraine from territory it seized in Kursk

Big question is how White House will interpret Putin's statement

Liza Fokht
BBC Russian service

Putin’s stance on a ceasefire in Ukraine shows that, after three years of war, the Kremlin is more than capable of practicing clever diplomacy.

On the one hand, he appeared to respond positively to the US proposal for an immediate halt to hostilities.

A direct “no” would have strained relations between the Kremlin and the White House - ties that have only recently begun to improve and, in recent weeks, have largely worked in Moscow’s favour.

On the other hand, agreeing to an unconditional ceasefire, from the Kremlin’s perspective, could weaken Russia’s position on the battlefield.

Russia had "enduring" peace before they invaded their neighbor.

No one was harming or threatening to harm Russians in Russia.

Putin went on a mission of conquest that he expected to be over in days. He badly miscalculated losing a large percentage of his armed forces in the process over the last 3 years.

He could have peace today by simply withdrawing from Ukraine.

Glad to see this ... I am very optimistically guarded....but nonetheless .... Putin is softening, and he is thanking Trump!

Better remove Putin then.

Have some faith in Trump on this issue.  I sure do.  Progress is being made.  I know you want Putin eliminated but right now I am hopeful that a peaceful process can be achieved.

??? Some conflicting information in regards to what Putin is doing.  Trump/Russia are still ironing things out.  I wouldn't rule out anything right now, nor say Putin isn't going to budge.

Russia agrees in principle to 30-day ceasefire with Ukraine

Thursday’s conversation comes on the heels of a tentative ceasefire deal in the Russia-Ukraine war. Russian President Vladimir Putin said Thursday that he agrees in principle with the U.S.-proposed plan, the Associated Press reported.

“So, the idea itself is correct, and we certainly support it,” Putin said at a news conference in Moscow. “But there are issues that we need to discuss, and I think that we need to discuss it with our American colleagues and partners.”

Ukraine on Monday agreed to accept the same deal in exchange for the U.S. resuming intelligence sharing and security assistance.

No specifics have been made public, but the White House has said everyone — Russia and Ukraine included — will have to make some kind of concession to reach a deal............
