Donalds on rumored Florida gubernatorial bid: ‘We’ll see what happens’

Rep. Byron Donalds (R-Fla.) teased Friday that he may throw his hat into the ring to replace outgoing Gov. Ron DeSantis (R).

“We’ll see what happens,” he told fellow guest Puck’s Tara Palmeri Friday evening on “Real Time with Bill Maher,” when asked about the 2026 gubernatorial race.

Sources close to Donalds told The Hill last month that the close ally to President Trump has approached Florida donors and also made notable political hires, such as the president’s 2016 and 2024 pollster Tony Fabrizio.

Maher asked the two guests whether they thought DeSantis’s wife, Casey DeSantis, could run for the position herself. Palmeri promptly redirected the question toward Donalds.

“I mean, nobody’s in the race right now,” Donalds responded.

“You mean you might jump in there?” Maher asked.

Donalds shrugged, telling the HBO host to ask the reporter to his left.

Palmeri went on to cite her own sources and recent polls, noting that Donalds, Casey DeSantis and former Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) — who resigned from Congress and later withdrew his name from consideration to head Trump’s Justice Department amid controversy — are fan favorites for the job.

“We’ll see what happens,” Donalds repeated.

In January, Gaetz suggested he had begun to contemplate a run for the governorship while sources told NBC News Friday that Florida’s first lady is seriously considering a bid.

DeSantis, who ran an unsuccessful 2024 presidential campaign against Trump, is term limited and cannot seek reelection. ...........

You have a very deep bench in FL.  I hope you can avoid an internecine battle.
For unvaccinated, we are looking at a winter of severe illness and death — if you’re unvaccinated — for themselves, their families, and the hospitals they’ll soon overwhelm. Sloe Joe Biteme 12/16
I will NOT comply.

We'll see if he even throws has hat into the ring, as DeSantis' wife may decide to run (which I hope not).

I don't know of any others yet that have their eye on the governorship yet.  Donalds IMHO would make an excellent governor.

DeSantis has fought many battles on his own (Amendments 3&4, reedy creek, firing Soros DAs, redistricting, immigration, lockdowns, Everglades restoration, woke curriculum).  Most of the people rumored to be interested were either silent or derisive towards the governor.  His wife may be our best option going forward.

I'll take a close look at Casey.

Trump has exceeded every expectation and is doing a tremendous job.
His key nominees are crushing it, firing all the people who deserve it, and streamlining the agencies’ processes.
But his FL endorsements are horrible.
He needs to take a step back from those.

Strategically, I don’t know why Donalds would want to peak this early.
No one in Florida is even thinking about the governor’s race right now.
We have a lot of talent in this state, and we don’t even know who is going to jump into the primary.

DeSantis at Tampa presser: "I think people look at it & say, You’ve got a guy like Byron — he just hasn’t been a part of any of the victories that we’ve had here over the left over these last years"
"He’s been in other states campaigning ... & that’s fine, but OK, well, then deliver results" in DC

DeSantis on his wife possibly running for governor: "She's never angled for anything ... but I will tell you this: You're talking about somebody like her. I won by the biggest margin that any Republican's won a governor's race here in Florida. She would do better than me."

Byron taking left propaganda and using it against DeSantis to help Trump, and the "desantis is removing learning about slavery" garbage he propagated is going to haunt him. And I like Byron, but I don't think DeSantis forgives that easily.

Supposedly there are skeletons in the Byron Donalds closet.  I don’t know if there are, but after what happened in North Carolina last year,  it’s got my FL relatives nervous. My kids are Trump robotic voters - but they’d support CaseyD over BryonD enthusiastically.

This isn’t a Mark Robinson scenario, but there are better candidates.

This image actually shows Byron Donalds spewing racial tropes at a Trayvon Martin rally back in 2012. Donalds was an SJW before his “conservative epiphany.”

Sometimes people have an epiphany and really change their views.   I know it happened with my cousin - a former Bernie supporter now very conservative.

I arrived in the Sunshine State at 17 years old on a Greyhound bus, with a trunk full of clothes and a dream. Now is the time to keep the best state in the country as the best state in the country. Tonight, I am proud to announce my candidacy to be the next governor of Florida. ...

Finger in the air politics doesn’t work here.
He sided with Disney against DeSantis and families.
He sided with Kamala Harris on education.
He’s missed 120+votes.
No thank you.
