I can't find it in the Youtube memory hole, but there was a 60 Minutes interview with Paul Wellstone, who was a true believer liberal do-gooder, in which he recalled his first weeks in the Senate.
He had already introduced campaign finance legislation there and was quite proud of himself. But one morning while riding the underground tram between the Senate Office Building and the Capitol, he happened to sit with a hero of his---one of the big powerful Democrat Senators who was apparently known for his anti-corruption bluster. Expecting a big pat on the back for his bill, Wellstone was shocked when this Senate Dem leader leaned over to him, and said in a hushed but stern voice, "Young man, you need to learn how things work around here, and to get your hand out of my pocket!" This "hero" said nothing else to Wellstone but just sat and stared harshly at him for the rest of the trip. Wellstone's eyes were suddenly opened, but he still voted for every crazy liberal thing that came along in the Senate.
I wish I could find and post that interview...I've never forgotten it, and often wonder who that unnamed Democrat Senate leader was who told Wellstone to back off.
