Canada announces retaliatory tariffs on long-time ally

OTTAWA, Feb 1 (Reuters) - Canada will retaliate against President Donald Trump'snew tariffs with 25% levies on a raft of U.S. imports, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Saturday, warning Americans that Trump's actions would have real consequences for them.

As relations between the long-time allies who share the world's longest land border reach a new low, Trudeau told a news conference he was slapping tariffs on C$155 billion ($107 billion) of U.S. goods. Those on C$30 billion will take effect on Tuesday, the same day as Trump's tariffs, and duties on the remaining C$125 billion in 21 days, he said.
Trudeau's announcement came just hours after Trump ordered 25% tariffs on Canadian and Mexican imports and 10% on goods from China, risking a trade war that economists say could slow global growth and reignite inflation.
Trump said he would impose 10% tariff on all energy imports from Canada.

The Canadian leader said tariffs would include American beer, wine and bourbon, as well as fruits and fruit juices, including orange juice from Trump's home state of Florida. Canada would also target goods including clothing, sports equipment and household appliances.

Trudeau said the coming weeks would be difficult for Canadians but that Americans would also suffer from Trump's actions.
"Tariffs against Canada will put your jobs at risk, potentially shutting down American auto assembly plants and other manufacturing facilities," Trudeau said, addressing U.S. citizens during a press conference in Ottawa.
"They will raise costs for you, including food at the grocery store and gas at the pump."
Canada is considering non-tariff measures, potentially relating to critical minerals, energy procurement and other partnerships, Trudeau said..............

Little Justin is trying to get into a dick measuring contest with Trump.   He reminds me of Gavin Newsom.

This will not end well.  Hope they get a conservative gov elected soon.

Has Trump actually defined the specific issues he has with Canada?

Securing their borders is obviously one big one.

Canada subsidizing their industry could be a big issue.

Canada's tariffs on American goods are typically around 4% so not all that high.

As long as we need oil from overseas, with the Canadian tariff added, is their oil more expensive?  If so, get the oil elsewhere.

Not sure this is accurate as it seems high, but I did find this.

Just love how uneducated both Americans and Canadians truly are.

Here are just some historic tariffs Canada hits America with.

Milk: 270%
Cheese: 245%
Butter: 298%
Chicken: 238%
Sausages: 69.9%
Barley seed: 57.8%
Bovine/meat: 26.5%
Cars: 25%
HVAC: 45%
Vacuums: 35%
Cable boxes: 35%
TVs: 45%
Steel: 25%
Aluminum: 45%
Copper: 48%

Take a guess how much financial aide the U.S. sends Canada EVERY YEAR and how much military defense $$$$ we provide?

There's a lot of people in Canada fed up with the Canadian Dairy Cartel that keeps prices high and ripping us off

e.g. in the US, you can still get a 12" takeout pizza, with real mozzarella, for $10

There is no such thing in Canada ... you'll be lucky if you can get it for $20 ... and even then the toppings are thin

It is all very messed up. Perhaps this will break the cycle. We'll just have to wait and see.

Trump is behaving stupidly with this tariff nonsense.  And attacking Canada like this because he despises Trudeau is just petty and self-defeating.  Trudeau's finished anyway so this won't end well for America or Canada.

???? We must be getting our pizza from the wrong pizza chain.   $10.00 for a pizza?  Those days have long gone.

For as long as I have been dealing with Canadians, they all seem to have an inferiority complex when it come to Americans, and they try to over compensate. Thankfully we don't see to many of them since their dollar is in the shitter.

Trudeau is warning Canadians to brace for difficult times; same as Trump has told Americans.

Keep in mind a few of the reasons Trump is implementing tariffs; "Trump has said that he planned to impose tariffs on imported goods to boost American manufacturing and end, what he says, are unfair trade practices.".....

I tend to agree.

We need FAIR trade, period from both Mexico, Canada and China  -- did Trump renegotiate NAFTA for the very reason???
