Rubio Suspends Refugee Operations, Vows to Vet Visas
Secretary of State Marco Rubio has directed the Department of State to cease refugee resettlement operations and enhance visa vetting. The directive follows President Donald Trump’s executive orders aimed at “Realigning The United States Refugee Admissions Program” and “[Protecting] the United States From Foreign Terrorists And Other National Security And Public Safety Threats.” Trump previously stated, “I will declare a national emergency at our southern border. All illegal entry will immediately be halted.”
Rubio said, “There will be changes, but the changes are not meant to be destructive. They’re not meant to be punitive.”
Rubio added, “The changes will be because we need to be a 21st century agency that can move by — a cliché that’s used by many — at the speed of relevance,” stating, “But we really need to be thinking about where are we going to be in five, seven, 10 or 15 years. Some of the issues that confront humanity today have no precedent.”
The order suspends the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program (USRAP) and mandates increased vetting of visa applications from regions identified as security risks. The Secretary of State and the Secretary of Homeland Security may admit refugees on a case-by-case basis if it serves national interests.
