COMMENTARY: Five Initiatives to Achieve AI Engineering Dominance

It is well known that in competition with geopolitical rivals, the United States increasingly sees the technology underpinning artificial intelligence as a key battleground. It is also well known that there are serious doubts about the ability to establish and maintain U.S. dominance in this space.

The path forward is less obvious. AI is still an evolving technology, and the research areas and key investment points are not always clear. One aspect of AI that remains overlooked but should be a crucial focus for national defense policymakers is the overlap area of AI and engineering, another field in which the nation is perceived to be falling behind.

A recent report, “AI Engineering: A Strategic Research Framework to Benefit Society,” produced by the Engineering Research Visioning Alliance, an initiative funded by the National Science Foundation, sought to define the emerging field of AI engineering and identify five research priorities around which decision-makers — including in the defense establishment — must collaborate on driving key advances.

AI engineering is a nascent field arising from convergence and synthesis that will advance the nation’s interests by leveraging the traditional strengths of engineering disciplines with breakthrough developments in the field.
