A major solar power plant project that was granted over a billion dollars in federal loans is on the road to closure, with energy experts blasting the project as a “boondoggle” that harmed the environment.

In 2011, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) under former President Barack Obama issued $1.6 billion in loan guarantees to finance the Ivanpah Solar Power Facility, a green energy project that consists of three solar concentrating thermal power plants in California.

The facility was touted by then-Secretary of Energy Ernest Moniz as an “example of how America is becoming a world leader in solar energy.” But after 10 years, the federally funded plant is now on track to close.

Projects like Ivanpah Solar Power Facility were built (as experiments) after the 1973 Oil Embrago. 

Solar Thermal has not been a complete disaster in Spain, but, Europe has a higher baseline for energy costs.

Solar Thermal has not been a complete disaster in Spain, but, Europe has a higher baseline for energy costs.
Ivanpah did not generate its first power until 2014, 40 years after that embargo.

If that's why it was built, it was even a bigger failure than we ever imagined.

I don't see a problem with using solar or wind power as a supplement to existing energy sources. But they aren't reliable and consequently shouldn't be subsidized.

I do for a multitude of reasons. the costs of building and installing them in the first place and then cleaning them up when they inevitably fail being chief among them.

Agreed. But if it is private enterprise it falls on the company. I can't see that it would be a lucrative endeavor but people are so big on "green".
If my memory serves, and it may not, T Boone Pickens was big on wind power until he found out the costs.
