Projects like Ivanpah Solar Power Facility were built (as experiments) after the 1973 Oil Embrago. Solar Thermal has not been a complete disaster in Spain, but, Europe has a higher baseline for energy costs.
I don't see a problem with using solar or wind power as a supplement to existing energy sources. But they aren't reliable and consequently shouldn't be subsidized.
I do for a multitude of reasons. the costs of building and installing them in the first place and then cleaning them up when they inevitably fail being chief among them.
Failure is the motto of the Green Movement
