Yes.
The "choice" is... BOTH.

Coal for electric power generation. It can now be burned cleanly, the plants can be built quickly, and coal can be "stockpiled" against shortages. And there's more coal than there is of any other "fuel resource".

Gas for "home usage". Great for home heating, cooking, hot water. With a power failure, the gas hot water heater still works, so all you need is continued water pressure. Can also be used for home generators as well.

Well, if you want to go that far, hydropower provides flood control, year-round reservoirs of water for agriculture, city water supplies, and fishing/recreation. Once built, the energy is pretty much a lovely byproduct. We've been using it since before we used it to generate electricity, too.

Basically, we end up back where we were with a portfolio of cheap and dependable--and reliable energy sources, which is what made our current standard of living possible.
