Rise of the robot submarine: The next big thing in naval warfare

Robotic submarines are ushering in a new era of underwater military tactics. These drones, technically called autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), offer similar benefits to conventional submarines but can take things to the next level.

What are robot subs?
Robot submarines (AUVs) are a subcategory of unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs). UUVs include military, research, and civilian, including non-autonomous, remotely operated underwater vehicles (ROVs).

AUVs are effectively specialized robots for specific underwater operations. Being autonomous, these craft do not require direct control or input from remote pilots.
 
They are used for various tasks ranging from underwater exploration and research to militarized variants designed for attacking surfaces or conventional underwater craft like submarines. Other variants also exist for minesweeping or special operations.

However, when used for military purposes, these vehicles tend to be referred to as unmanned undersea vehicles (UUVs). The first was developed in the late 1950s to study diffusion, acoustic transmission, and submarine tracking.
