The Navy is reaping what is sowed. The consequences will be terrible in the long run.
The schedule for mariners became all the more severe during the COVID-19 pandemic due to the prevention measures imposed by the now-retired Military Sealift Command Commander Rear Admiral Michael Wettlaufer.
As part of the imposed “gangway up” policy of Wettlaufer, crewmates were not allowed to disembark their vessels for months on end, which resulted in several mariners quitting their jobs, furthering the manpower deficit issue.
“[During] COVID nobody was getting off the ship, mariners were being treated poorly and so they started to quit,” another retired mariner was quoted as saying.
“[Since then] mariners have been quitting at a greater rate than MSC can hire new ones… People say ‘I had to quit because it’s a terrible work-life balance. I can’t go to sea and also have a family, so I got to leave,'” the person added.
