There are some yes that are brainwashed, but the bigger problems are 1) normalcy bias and denialism, and 2) a rebellious sense of moral superiority over common sense.
People think things will be as they always are. Even with COVID alot of people just keep plodding along like a drunk donkey with little dreamy dreams inside their heads. They will not accept we as a nation need to pull back, get our feet on the ground, and fix our problems. They want to keep forging ahead, which makes them susceptible to the smoke of empty promises blown up their butts.
The other problem I see is there are so many that are more dedicated to feeling morally superior on issues than they are to their personal economic outlook. They will flip the bird at anyone that disagrees with their world view despite the facts, and the fact that voting for it amounts to stabbing themselves in the eye. But oh are they righteous!
