Rich, entitled eco activists loathe the working poor
Story by Ella Whelan • 3h
Just imagine – it’s the school holidays, you’ve forked out an eye-watering sum to get your family away for one measly week, spent the last three days strategically packing to avoid having to take out a loan for checked bags and your toddler has just told you he needs the toilet. What last punishment could holiday hell visit on you? That’s right, a bunch of Just Stop Oil protesters in your way.
Seven of the climate nuts locked themselves to suitcases attempting to bar the entrance to departures at Gatwick Airport’s Southern Terminal. A video showed holidaymakers stepping over the glum protesters who proceeded to lie down and look even more morose than those about to face a never-ending security queue. It’s all impossibly polite – if it were me, my suitcase might have slipped and interacted with one of the killjoys. Eventually, Sussex Police arrested eight people on “suspicion of interfering with public infrastructure”.
There has to be nothing more miserable than trying to ruin ordinary people’s holiday. This wasn’t the business lounge at City Airport, or the private jet of some celebrity, but a targeted attack against normal holidaymakers – many of whom will have been looking forward to a break all year. For evidence of Just Stop Oil’s anti-working-class prejudice, look no further than these kinds of stunts – lecturing people about how wrong they are to dare to want some joy in their life.
