Giant plumes of Sahara Desert dust that gust across the Atlantic can suppress hurricane formation over the ocean and affect weather in North America.

But thick dust plumes can also lead to heavier rainfall – and potentially more destruction – from landfalling storms, according to a July 24 study in Science Advances. The research shows a previously unknown relationship between hurricane rainfall and Saharan dust plumes.

“Surprisingly, the leading factor controlling hurricane precipitation is not, as traditionally thought, sea surface temperature or humidity in the atmosphere. Instead, it’s Sahara dust,”

said the corresponding author Yuan Wang, an assistant professor of Earth system science at the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability.

Since for rain to form, there must be hygroscopic nuclei (dust) this makes sense. :yowsa:

I'll take dirty rain over a 'cane any day here in FL.

We have been getting good rain here in the L.A. portion of FL.  But it does leave a dirty film on stuff when it dry's.
You don’t become cooler with age but you do care progressively less about being cool, which is the only true way to actually be cool.

So, we're screwed?

If we don't plant trees in the Sahel, the Atlantic Basin will be inundated by flooding rains.

If we do plant trees in the Sahel, the Atlantic Basin will get more hurricanes.

Here's a dumb-ass solution that a Global Climate Change "scientists" may take to heart ... to fight rising oceans levels and to control Atlantic Basin weather, why not pump Atlantic Ocean water into the Sahara to create an inland sea to re-create a "wet" Sahara climate?  Is this any dumber than mass extincting farting animals to reduce methane?
