The U.S. Navy's Ohio-Class Submarine Nightmare Is Making China Smile
Story by Peter Suciu • 3h • 4 min read

Summary and Key Points You Need to Know: The Ohio-class nuclear-powered submarines were initially designed as ballistic missile submarines (SSBNs) for the U.S. Navy. Of the 24 planned, 18 were built between 1976 and 1997. Following the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START II) in 1992, four of the oldest submarines, including the USS Ohio, were converted to conventionally-armed submarines (SSGNs).

-These converted submarines, now equipped with Tomahawk Land Attack Missiles and enhanced communication systems, serve critical roles, including hosting Special Forces.

-However, as these submarines near retirement, the U.S. Navy faces challenges in maintaining its vertical launch payload capacity due to delays in the new Virginia and Columbia-class submarine programs.
