Earth will not perish due to climate change
By Kasper Walet.
Some call the outcome of the COP 28 climate meeting in Dubai last week historic, others say that it is a lame compromise with all kinds of possibilities for countries to get out of the agreements. It is indeed historic that for the first time there is a formal agreement, the core of which is to 'move away' from fossil fuels. But that is, of course, a very vague text with such weak wording that countries can use it in any direction. The question is therefore justified whether it will encourage many countries outside Europe and of course the Netherlands as the most well-behaved boy in the class to take more climate action?
It certainly does not mean that we will soon go to a world without oil. If only because oil is not only used to run our cars, but is also a necessary raw material for the production of all kinds of products. Such as wind turbines or solar panels deemed necessary for the energy transition.
We'll see how this develops. In the world, but also in our own country. We have to wait and see what kind of new government we get. In any case, the possible coalition between PVV, NSC, BBB and perhaps the VVD are in a very different position in the climate contest than Rob Jetten of D66. But they must also operate within the obligations of the European Union. As a country, you can't just deviate from that. The latter applies to the climate, but of course also in, for example, the nitrogen discussion. To end the year on a positive note: humanity will not perish in the short term as a result of climate change. Contrary to what Extinction Rebellion wants to tell us by gluing itself to the A12.
