Biden to mark Good Friday peace deal in 5-day Irish trip

Provisional itinerary seen by POLITICO has Biden starting in Northern Ireland and finishing with family visit to cousins in County Mayo.

DUBLIN — U.S. President Joe Biden will pay a five-day visit to both parts of Ireland next month to mark the 25th anniversary of the U.S.-brokered Good Friday peace accord, according to a provisional Irish government itinerary seen by POLITICO.

The plans, still being finalized with the White House, have the president arriving in Northern Ireland on April 11. That’s one day after the official quarter-century mark for the Good Friday Agreement, the peace deal designed to end decades of conflict that claimed more than 3,600 lives.

With Irish roots on both sides of his family tree, Biden has long taken an interest in brokering and maintaining peace in Northern Ireland. He has welcomed the recent U.K.-EU agreement on making post-Brexit trade rules work in the region — a breakthrough that has yet to revive local power-sharing at the heart of the 1998 accord.

According to two Irish government officials involved in planning the Biden visit itinerary, the president will start his stay overnight at Hillsborough Castle, southwest of Belfast, the official residence for visiting British royalty, as a guest of the U.K.’s Northern Ireland Secretary Chris Heaton-Harris.

Nothing going on in the United States. May as well decamp to a foreign country.

Report: Police Stop New IRA Bomb Plot Ahead of Biden Visit
 Jon Dougherty
April 10, 2023

Authorities in Northern Ireland reportedly thwarted a bomb plot orchestrated by members of the New IRA ahead of President Joe Biden’s upcoming visit to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement, an arrangement that put an end to the long-running, low-intensity civil war in the region which was known locally as “the Troubles.”

A source told The Belfast Telegraph that members of the New IRA, a paramilitary splinter group of the Irish Republican Army, were “looking for parts to make a bomb” in the border city of Derry.

“The belief is that the New IRA was planning some sort of attack to coincide with Biden’s visit, similar to the mortar attack on the cops in Strabane last November,” the source told the local newspaper, according to Fox News.

As Biden’s visit approaches, authorities have issued warnings that political dissidents may be planning to instigate violence in order to disrupt the event. ... Conservative Brief

He had to put his kilt away.  Wrong country.

Biden heads to Northern Ireland at delicate political juncture

U.S. President Joe Biden arrives in Belfast on Tuesday at a delicate political time in Northern Ireland as he helps mark the 25-year anniversary of a peace deal that largely ended 30 years of bloodshed there.

Biden, known for decades for his pro-Irish views, will need to tread carefully as pro-British unionists loyal to London continue to boycott the devolved power-sharing government that was a fundamental part of the 1998 Good Friday Agreement.

Biden was expected to meet representatives from five Northern Irish parties in advance of his speech at Ulster University but was not planning to pressure them, a senior administration official said..............

Joe Biden in Belfast to mark 25th anniversary of Good Friday Agreement

US President Joe Biden has landed in Belfast at the start of an historic four-day visit to Northern Ireland and the Republic.

Mr Biden was greeted by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak as he stepped off Air Force One at Belfast International Airport.

His visit marks the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement - a peace deal which helped end 30 years of violent conflict in Northern Ireland.

The White House hailed the "tremendous progress" since it was signed in 1998.

But Mr Biden's trip is overshadowed by the fact that Northern Ireland's power-sharing government is not functioning.

It collapsed last year when the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) - one of the biggest parties at Stormont - pulled out as part of a protest against post-Brexit trade rules for Northern Ireland.

Mr Biden arrived in Belfast city centre at about 22:20 BST after making the journey from the airport in his presidential motorcade.

A huge security operation has been in place for most of Tuesday, with many city centre streets closed ahead of the visit.

Ahead of his arrival, Mr Biden said he was looking forward to marking the anniversary in Belfast and "underscoring the US commitment to preserving peace and encouraging prosperity".

His trip to Belfast will be the first leg of a four-day stay in Ireland, during which he will also discuss his Irish roots and meet Irish relatives. His sister Valerie and his son Hunter are also accompanying the US president on the visit...........

The New IRA is probably getting its funds from criminal activity.

Security details of Joe Biden’s plans in Ireland found on a Belfast street
By Joseph Clark - The Washington Times - Wednesday, April 12, 2023

Documents containing sensitive details about President Biden’s overseas trip were found on the streets of Belfast on Wednesday, prompting an investigation by police officials in Northern Ireland.

A passerby discovered the five-page document which detailed where Mr. Biden was staying in Northern Ireland and cell phone numbers for police officers in the president’s security detail. The person who made the rare find then called a BBC station to report it.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland later confirmed the security breach. ...
