Climate change and antimicrobial resistance are two of the greatest threats to global health, according to a new report from the United Nations Environment Programme.

The report, titled “Bracing for Superbugs,” highlights the role of climate change and other environmental factors contributing to the rise of antimicrobial resistance. It was announced Tuesday at the Sixth Meeting of the Global Leaders Group on Antimicrobial Resistance in Barbados.

Antimicrobial resistance or AMR happens when germs such as bacteria, viruses and fungi develop the ability to defeat the medications designed to kill them.

More people died of drug-resistant bacterial infections in 2019 than HIV or malaria, new study suggests

“The development and spread of AMR means that antimicrobials used to prevent and treat infections in humans, animals and plants might turn ineffective, with modern medicine no longer able to treat even mild infections,” the UN Environment Programme said in a news release.

AMR is just Natural Selection at work.  Mother Nature is just trying to find a way to cull the human herd.

  • I was a "conspiracy theorist". Now I'm just right.
Bullshit.

We already heard about the ongoing gain-of-function research being carried out on the corporate level, and because that's a highly competitive environment, it's not foolish to assume that more than one company is doing it.

Then there are the biowar labs, and if the commercial labs aren't playing by the rules, it's even less likely those out there looking for 'Captain Trips' are, either.

So quit trying to blame all the world's evils on the weather, and put them where they belong.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

Don’t know if you’re serious, but you are correct about natural selection—just not about the culling.  Microorganisms, like bacteria and viruses, need the host alive and multiplying.  It’s not a viable survival strategy for microbes to decimate populations. Nature prefers balance to asymmetry.  A little bit here, a little bit there.

As for the drug resistance aspect of the report, I hope they’re not trying to say that drug resistance in microbial life is a new phenomenon (brought about directly as a result of “climate change”)?  Which has been noted and studied since the earliest days of pharmaceuticals, and is indeed simply natural selection in action.

If there is any prliferation of pathogenic super-bugs, it's due to government sponsored gain of function type activities.

Kind of greasing the skids aren't they?
