The college admissions process has historically been a "system of power and oppression”, “white supremacy,” “anti-blackness,” “xenophobia,” and “patriarchy”.
The system heavily favors children of suburban, white professionals.
- Poor children need to work to help support family, so they don't have time and opportunity for extra-curricular activities.
- Poor children may not be able to afford the fees and equipment necessary to play on sports teams.
- Poor children may not be able to afford private college preparation courses.
- Poor children may not be able to afford the fees to take the SAT's and ACT's.
- Poor children may not be able to afford the fees for submitting applications to colleges.
- Poor children may not be able to afford to travel to visits potential schools.
- Even if awarded full scholarships, they do not always cover room, board, meals, books, fees, and other non-tuition costs not covered by those scholarships.
- The Ivy League universities used legacy admissions to discriminate against Jews and other ethnicities.
- Increasingly, racially-based affirmative action quotas are found to discriminate against Asian-Amercians.
The most significant "system of power and oppression" in our society is the college admissions process and the cost of college education.
