Wallet with $4,000 lost in Times Square incredibly returned to owner

By Ben Cost
March 4, 2022

This person restored faith in humanity.

A New York City good Samaritan proved that chivalry isn’t dead after she discovered a wallet containing thousands of dollars in Times Square — and got it back to its rightful owner.

The noble deed occurred Wednesday morning while Honduras native Eduardo Martinez was walking through the tourist-inundated area to get to work, NBC New York reported. During his commute, the man reportedly dropped his wallet, which contained $4,000 cash along with standard wallet items, near Broadway and 49th Street.

Upon realizing what had transpired, the panicked man returned to the crowded area, whereupon he was approached by two police officers. They explained that they’d been given a wallet by an unnamed woman who had been commuting to work at the same time as Martinez.

Yes, there are still some good people in the country.  happy77

Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly, do not claim to be wiser than you are.  Do not repay anyone evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the sight of all.  If it is possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all…do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Not everybody in this country is a scumbag.  Still many very good strangers performing random acts of kindness.

A youngish-looking guy with $4000 in his wallet. Doesn't speak English.

Not suspicious at all.

No, and apparently not to the police, either.

Perhaps that was the payroll for the company he works with - the weeks' wages for a crew of 10 - or perhaps it was his family's monthly rent - or perhaps it was his monthly wages from whatever job he works.

You know, if it were the 1980s I would agree. I used to carry cash payrolls like that - nervous as hell the whole time. But today - it's all digital, with the exception of a very few businesses.

Carrying cash isn't a crime ... yet.

Surprised that the cops didn't declare it drug money and seize in under asset forfeiture.

Not in NYC.  Plenty of people still carry a lot of cash and do business in cash.

I always have over a grand in my pocket, normally over two. If you are doing buy/sell nothing speaks like Benjamins.  So I don't find it suspicious at all that someone would have a roll on.

REALLY? Y'all don't carry money?

From what I hear, a lot of illegals don't trust banks and carry a good deal of their cash around with them.

Back in the summer of 1983, I was working for Metro-North Railroad as a hostler, moving commuter cars around in the Croton-Harmon (NY) shops.

Working one night on the midnight shift, I was in a car scrounging for papers to read (which I would also use for a pillow when the work was done for a while). Just happened to see a wallet lying on one of the seats.

I picked it up, didn't even look in it, and brought it to the foreman's office, and they said they'd handle it.

Turns out that it belonged to one of the hotshot producers on "60 minutes".
Got a letter from the company for that one...

I rarely have more than $20 in my wallet. Debit card or bank app. The only time I carry more is when I want to get a haircut, leave a tip, or buy a firearm.

Sooo.... When the internet or the electricity goes off you're pretty much screwed.

I dunno. And I ain't cussing you really. It just seems so unlikely to me. Weird even.

I am more likely to be the other way around, especially since I couldn't get at my banked money for something like 3 months at the beginning of the plandemic. It's my bank account that is likely to be nearly empty. But my pocket is always good.

I may have neglected to mention that I have silver and gold coins and a host of useful items for trade and barter.

Good on ya, but that ain't what I meant so much... I am talking about two or three days...
And I didn't mean that was weird - It's just that I always run into good deals laying around that I would miss if I didn't have money in hand. That's what it's for... seed corn. It would be very strange to me to be without a roll. That's all.
