A Case For Getting Married

At a time when Valentine's Day has become grotesque, a word should be said for old-fashioned romance and youthful matrimony.

Asking me to write a Valentine’s Day column is an unconscionable bit of trolling, like inviting Michael Vick to speak at a PETA luncheon banquet. I cordially dislike “holidays,” especially Christian feasts that have become subsumed into our extended meta-narrative of consumption. I am the sort of reactionary ghoul liable to regale children tracing glitter glue around the edges of construction paper hearts with gruesome stories of Roman martyrdom, and to ask adults what medieval birds having sex has to do with chocolate and garish dinner specials. Besides, everyone knows that florists’ shops are a racket.

But in addition to being a more or less obliging contributing editor, I am at heart a romantic, and so instead of begging off Micah’s invitation, I will do as I was asked and use the occasion of next week’s holiday to say something about a subject of not inconsiderable interest to me. I mean, of course, my wife.

Stuff like this makes me cry.

Not sure if it's tears of joy, sadness over what I was supposed to have but never will, weeping in anguish over the wayward generation with which I am surrounded and which clearly does not want me.

Life goes on as it always does here in the Midwest. The younger generation is getting married and for the most part staying together.

I actually like the younger women. They are far more down-to-earth than many of the women in my generation, Gen X. I have met many great ones, and they all make me wish I was 25 years younger.

Of course, we retain our culture here better than most places, but I don't knock that generation so much anymore. They have their flaws like everyone, but overall they are pretty good.

Much of the problem lies in the liberal Northeast and West Coast liberal bunghole paradises.

That's right. And all that is built upon it or above it in terms of the support of it relies upon that originating spiritual essence. When society no longer supports it - its one and only job - doom is certain and not far away.
