USAF ordered 20mm Gatling-style cannon guns for F-16 fighters

WASHINGTON – In the middle of the month, on December 15, the US Air Force ordered the production of M61A1 Vulcan Gatling-style 20mm cannon guns, learned BulgarianMilitary.com, citing a statement from the US Department of Defense [DoD].

The order is worth $ 88.2 million and will be implemented by General Dynamics-OTS Inc., Williston, Vermont. The deadline for the execution of the contract set by the State Department is December 12, 2031. According to the announcement, the ordered quantity of M61A1 Vulcan Gatling-style 20mm cannon guns is unlimited and will be used to support the weapon system of the 4th F-16 Fighting Falcon fighters.

The M61A1 Vulcan has been in service since the 1950s. This gun has served the combat capability of aircraft such as F-104, F-105B / D / F, A-7D, F-4E, B-58, B-52H and continues to be in service in F-15 and F- 16. There is another variant called M61A2 – this version is lighter and currently examines the combat capabilities of the F-22 Raptor.
